It seems your 3900X gets quite warm, even with an NH-D14 cooler. The way you apply thermal paste doesn't seem crucial unless you're dealing with a very powerful chip like a Threadripper.

I’m planning to install the NH-D15 cooler with the provided thermal paste, which should spread smoothly, so I’ll likely aim for a very fine finish.
