Hello fellow lovers of tech. I’m facing a solid deal on a laptop featuring the Ryzen 5500U. The specs look appealing and the price is attractive. My main worry lies with the memory setup: it comes with 4GB soldered in, plus another 4GB in a SO-DIMM slot. It’s claimed to expand up to 20GB by swapping the 4GB module for a 16GB one. Right now 8GB seems reasonable, particularly since the APU already uses 500MB to 2GB. Still, the 4GB are permanently fixed. I recall Intel’s flex mode from years ago—memory could sometimes operate in dual channels, depending on how RAM was arranged. You’d see fluctuating speeds, switching between dual and single channel. That was a while back. When I bought my previous 300€ model, it had six cores, which is impressive. Still, a few points remain: 1) Does AMD Ryzen support this kind of configuration? From discussions, ads, and other sources I’m fairly confident it does. 2) Have memory controllers improved to prioritize dual channel usage before falling back to single channel? That would likely boost performance. 3) With an APU, the extra RAM means less need to hit the pagefile, but does that offset any slowdown when switching to single channel randomly? The setup supports 4GB plus 16GB or 4GB plus 4GB in dual-channel mode. The other 12GB won't utilize dual-channel. This means dual-channel offers a clear benefit, even if it's capped at 8GB in this configuration.
