Memory insufficient even with 8GB of VRAM.
Hello, a week back I purchased an RX6650XT with 8 gigabytes of VRAM. When I increased my settings the game would crash and show a crash report saying there wasn’t enough memory allocated. This issue also affects Opera GX while playing any game—whether it lags or stops completely when I open a browser. That’s odd since I have 16 gigabytes of 3200MHz RAM, using only about 50-55% when a game is running and I try to open a browser. Could this be due to a faulty driver? Should I consider adding more RAM? I play Apex Legends, Diablo II Res, Genshin Impact, and NFS Heat, and in all these games the same memory shortage report appears, even when lowering graphics or opening a browser. My PC components are: Sapphire RX 6650 XT, Ryzen 5 5600G, 16GB 3200MHz RAM, B550M-A PRO 750W power supply.
Join the discussions here! Monitor your VRAM through tools like MSI Afterburner or GPU-Z under the sensors section to track usage. Eight gigabytes is starting to feel tight for current games, which explains the criticism around the 4060 8GB model.
Thanks for your clarification, I’m feeling a bit down thinking about how few gigs that is.
They will appear no matter what. You can also turn off the igpu in the BIOS.
I’ll definitely turn it off. But why can’t I launch Opera or any other app while playing?
It varies by game. Some programs experience crashes or strange behavior when switching from full screen to the application. Consider using windowed full screen or regular mode. Opera GX runs very efficiently on hardware and may conflict with active games. It’s better suited for browser apps like games, not as a background tool. You might face driver problems or other software interfering. Adjust your paging file size (virtual memory). A 4 to 6 GB setting usually works well with 16 GB RAM, especially on the fastest drive. The game may need more virtual memory than it should. The error indicates 128 TB of virtual memory is available. You might be using a RAID array for your OS or the page file is on that drive. Have you recently updated your driver? Your current driver is optimized for games like Starfield, which can cause issues in other titles. Consider rolling back to an older driver if needed. Review driver release notes for improvements. Upcoming drivers will likely support newer GPUs and recent releases. For older hardware, there’s little advantage unless you’re stuck with a specific game mentioned in the notes. Ensure the game is running on the GPU, not the iGPU. The Vega iGPU uses system memory as video memory, so overloading it can lead to instability when pushing settings high. Disable the iGPU in BIOS or set the correct GPU in your AMD driver tool or Windows settings.
The issue stems from the dedicated GPU consuming nearly half of the available RAM, with an additional allocation for the APU worsening the situation. The error reported by Apex Legends indicating 4.4GB usage before switching to virtual memory supports this. Fixing this will require addressing the shared memory settings in the BIOS to prevent system RAM from being allocated to the graphics card.
