I recently purchased a 32GB RAM kit consisting of two G.Skill Aegis 32GB DDR4 modules (3000MHz CL16 Dual Channel), paired with a GIGABYTE B450M DS3H motherboard. Both components arrived brand new. My system runs a Ryzen 2700X CPU and a 590 FATBOY AMD GPU. Despite using only 15.9GB, the Task Manager shows hardware reserved at 16.1GB. I've tried various troubleshooting steps—enabled XMP 2.0, re-seated RAM, adjusted BIOS settings, and even ran Windows Memory Diagnostic—but nothing resolved the issue. The system displays 32GB but only utilizes 16. I'm unable to identify why this discrepancy exists. I'll share screenshots of CPU-Z and the Task Manager error for reference. Any advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
This system message showed when RAM was capped at 4GB. The remaining space was labeled as Hardware Reserved. It’s unclear why your motherboard restricts memory, but it might be limited to 16GB by the maker. According to Gigabyte, your board can handle up to 128GB of RAM. You can verify if you have the newest BIOS, which may improve performance. Another tip is to review the chip configuration in your memory modules—Gigabyte recommends using "non-ECC Un-buffered DIMM 1Rx8/2Rx8/1Rx16." Some high-density chips can use different layouts, so you might end up with less capacity than expected. Good luck!
I reviewed the pin layout of the 2700X and recalled something from a long time ago—removing my CPU cooler along with the CPU. When I checked my CPU recently, I found out the memory controller was damaged because three or four pins were missing. Thanks to everyone who helped me figure this out. I think I’ll replace the motherboard and CPU instead.
