I purchased the same 16GB RAM kit twice within a year, hoping for a 32GB upgrade, but lacked the funds at the time. Now I’m wondering if selling it for cash to buy a 32GB model was a mistake. After checking CPU-Z, I see two modules labeled as Samsung and two from SK-Hynix—confirming they’re likely B-Die or CJR. The first time I bought the Hynix, slot three was the B-die module. My current issue is that all four modules cap at 2866 MHz, which causes instability. I haven’t run a stress test, but staying at that speed hasn’t led to crashes or reboots. It’s been steady since I reset it to 2866. Going above would still risk occasional failures.

I also face mismatched memory sticks from different makers. My system runs on a second-generation Ryzen processor, which isn’t known for excellent memory compatibility due to its weak controller. The ASRock X470 Taichi board has a T-format layout, and Buildzoid has noted performance concerns.

I’m unsure what’s limiting me—my CPU, the motherboard, or these mismatched modules. I plan to upgrade to Zen 3 eventually, so I might keep these boards to find a solution and aim for 3200 MHz. Alternatively, buying a 3600 could be an option, though having four rare B-die sticks would be ideal but risky since B-die is no longer available. Keeping the Hynix CJR feels like a poor choice because it’s unreliable.

My main concern seems to be the memory controller in the Zen+ chipset. I suspect mismatched modules are the bigger hurdle, as they could boost speeds if fixed, but sourcing compatible B-die RAM would cost money. It probably isn’t worth the effort.

So you bought two diff 3200mhz, similar in name etc, kits for 4x8gb. 1.) CPU memory controller is only rated to 2933mhz, anything over that is OC luck or dialing it in yourself to get more mhz. 2.) Your board doesn't support 3200mhz either at its memory controller 2A.) Here is your mobos support for memory, with a Pinnacle Ridge processor with Single Rank, and Dual Rank memory per slot: 3.) EDIT - and Im not sure how Zen+ is but with Zen as soon as I add 2 more sticks I cant OC over the CPU memory controller at all. With 2 sticks I can get 3600mhz stable (see links in sig) which is nearly 1000mhz faster than the CPU memory controller is rated for. (I Have two diff boards, kits, CPUs and both are well over the rated speed - had to dial in manually - and will not hit anything over that if I add more sticks)

Thinking about purchasing a new motherboard to take advantage of PCIe Gen4. I bought this model mainly for its VRM capabilities and M.2 slots. If I could afford it, I’d consider it, but I’ve only had this PC for about two years now. It probably isn’t worth the investment given how quickly new technology emerges. I just feel like my slow controller might limit Zen3’s performance.

Absolutely, those two extra sticks made it tough to meet the specs. I struggled with them, only managed a short effort, but it felt like hitting a solid barrier compared to when I was progressing toward 3600mhz on Zen. (And 3200mhz on my other CPU and board using that RAM kit.)

Acquiring a fresh motherboard, processor, and RAM essentially means setting up a brand new system. I’m thinking about upgrading my graphics card from the GTX 1070 eventually. Or maybe I’ll just put it aside and opt for the Switch instead. Honestly, the latest consoles can be quite pricey.
