I recently moved from 1Gig Comcast to 10G Sonic fiber, which also saves money each month. I’m curious how effective this upgrade really is, so I upgraded my router to an ASUS RT-AX89X because it has two 10G ports that can be set as WAN or LAN. I also added a 10G NIC to my PC. Despite these changes, I’m only seeing about 1.6G / 0.9G max. Here’s my setup: 10G SFP+ NIC in the motherboard’s PCIe port, followed by a 10G SFP+ DAC cable, then the ASUS RT-AX89X 10G SFP+ port, connected via a 10G RJ45 port (set as WAN), followed by Cat6 and an ISP ONT 10G port. I’m wondering why I can’t reach nearly 10Gbps when testing speeds. Another odd thing is that my router believes the nearest server is on the East Coast, even though I’m in the West Coast of North America. Ookla confirms this issue. When I switch to a closer local server, performance improves significantly. What do you think?
I'm checking how this works by running tests. The remote server might not have enough capacity. Some test sites also mention browser restrictions: https://www.ookla.com/articles/10-gbps-speedtest. Your connection path matters—after leaving your location it goes through your ISP's data center. These services rely on your IP address to estimate where you are. If those addresses are linked to your ISP's area, they'll pick the nearest servers accordingly.
It's a Samsung 980 PRO SSD with 1TB capacity, PCIe 4.0 NVMe Gen 4 technology, designed for gaming. The device you're referring to should work fine. Regarding network speed, it doesn't affect it—your internet performance remains unchanged regardless of the drive.
Navigating through NIC properties, this card lacks Green, EE, or Gigabit Lite options. I accidentally adjusted several settings—disabled TCP offloading, set Transmit Buffer to 1024, turned off interrupt moderation, configured speed and duplex to 10 Gbps Full Duplex, raised max RSS queues from 8 to 16, and disabled flow control.
