MAX PAYNE 1 and 2 Remake will employ the internal Northlight engine!
Additional updates are emerging. Many gaming outlets have reported this news today.
Remedy Entertainment has just confirmed it will recreate the famous Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne titles through a new partnership with Rockstar Games. The studio plans to bring these classics together as one unified experience for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, utilizing its own Northlight engine.
Financial backing for the project comes from Rockstar Games, whose budget aligns with standard costs for high-profile Remedy titles.
It’s expected that the iconic character of Max Payne will remain central to the first installment. Given it’s a remake, a faithful recreation of his appearance should be achievable. There’s also optimism that Max Payne 2 will preserve its renowned ragdoll mechanics.
Sam Houser, Rockstar Games’ founder, remarked:
“We were delighted when our long-standing colleagues at Remedy reached out to us about reviving the original Max Payne titles. We deeply admire the creative efforts Remedy has put together over the years, and we’re eager to experience these updated versions.”
Tero Virtala, CEO of Remedy, added:
“Max Payne has always been a cherished figure within Remedy, and we understand how many fans around the globe share that sentiment. We’re thrilled once more to collaborate with Rockstar Games to reintroduce the original Max Payne experience in fresh ways.”
The collaboration between Remedy and Rockstar traces back to the debut of the acclaimed Max Payne and Max Payne 2 games, which were developed by Remedy and released by Rockstar. Both titles have left a lasting impact on popular culture, praised for their neo-noir vibe, innovative storytelling, and innovative “bullet-time” combat.
Under today’s agreement, Remedy will handle the development of a unified title across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S using its proprietary Northlight engine. The project’s funding will come from Rockstar Games, whose investment size reflects typical costs for major AAA titles from Remedy.
According to the announcement, the games are currently in the concept development phase. This means the remakes are not expected to launch soon. Alan Wake 2 remains without a set release date, though Remedy has pledged a 2023 launch target.
Meanwhile, the Max Payne series had been made compatible backward for Xbox consoles in 2021 as part of Microsoft’s backward compatibility initiative.
Whenever I encounter Sam Lake in an interview, it always makes me wonder—it's not Sam Lake, it's Max Payne!
To be honest, I haven't played the initial two Max Payne games yet. I just started with Max Payne 3, but I've also seen some gameplay videos for the first two titles.
MP 3 is my top choice, but the initial two are also good options, even though MP2 isn't long-lasting. If these recreations are executed well, they'll create strong rivalry with MP3.
I'm hoping because these are remakes they include some of the elements from Max Payne 3, such as the realistic handling of weapons. This made it more authentic and encouraged deeper consideration about weapon choices and when to get another two-handed one.
