Evening. Two factory paired DDR4 modules were installed in slots one and three for this motherboard using dual-channel configuration. An additional DDR4 stick of the same speed was added, though its timing differs from the first pair. Does the placement of the third stick in slot two or four matter? I think not since the matched pair already has its own dual-channel lane. Thank you very much.

The setup ensures all devices operate on a single channel most often. If needed, a third stick can adjust the configuration.

Using three sticks turns it into a single channel. You need to add one more stick, or choose single channel for better capacity over speed. Switching to single channel reduces performance by roughly 5-10%.

A2 vs B2 / 1-3 on the board – didn’t realize the third stick with perfect timing could ruin the dual channel setup, man!

The adjustment is a 5-10% decrease across all three sticks? What should we do? Maintain the matched low timings pair in dual channel and remove the other stick...?

It might be necessary to align all the times since the IMC could become mixed up. If your job needs more power, do it. But if you value bandwidth and speed, avoid adding another stick.

Sure, the third stick is just an additional support here. I'm going to replace the stick with a kickstand for something everyone really appreciates. I didn't even consider them all setting up in a single channel. Cheers!

Generally, single channel is the main issue. For me, 5% seems minor compared to handling over 100 Chrome tabs and playing games. If I were you, I’d stick with single channel until I could upgrade.

The effect of a 5% loss varies by game; however, increased RAM capacity might offset that difference.

Typically, RAM modules are designed for pairs, especially when you already have two installed—adding a third would be wasteful.
