I've been using a system with an Intel 9900k, 32GB RAM, and a 3200MHz processor, plus a 2080 Ti graphics card. After upgrading to an RTX 4090 at launch, performance on my 3440x1440 display has dropped significantly. I'm planning a full upgrade tomorrow for Black Friday. While Intel CPUs are now better for gaming, I prefer AMD because of the AM5 support coming later. My choice is the MSI Carbon WIFI X670E motherboard, G.Skill 32GB 6000MHz CL32 RAM, and I'm undecided about the CPU. I was thinking to wait until the next major model release, but it might take longer than I can handle. I primarily use my MacBook M1 Pro for productivity tasks—videos, browsing, and gaming (mostly AAA games). I’m considering the 7700X but would appreciate more opinions. In Q1 2023, I plan to replace my monitor with an OLED 4K at 120Hz or higher, hoping the new 32" LG model arrives soon. If not, I’ll go with a 42-inch version. Prices in Canada for the AMD CPUs are: 7600X $320, 7700X $450, 7900X $640, and 7950X $740 (all in CAD before taxes). All options fit my budget, but I want to avoid overspending without much gaming value.

There's a very good chance just doing this will eliminate the CPU issues.

Sorry to hear that. Your PC is linked to a Samsung Q80T, which runs at 4K 120Hz and supports Gsync. Despite that, you're still experiencing significant lag in games like Spider-Man.

Absolutely, your 12400 is limiting performance in Spider-man Remastered/Miles Morales, especially at 1440p/4K. For a 4090, the issue seems severe. You’d likely need something like 7700X or 13700K with DDR5 to break through.

Secure a 13900k. The 4090 pairing is the sole choice. You understood this before your 9900k and 2080ti. What makes this even a concern?

I’m avoiding Intel right now. While the 13900k is currently the top gaming CPU, I don’t want to commit to a system again. I’d rather not purchase another motherboard and cooler later if I upgrade the CPU, even if it means lower performance at the moment. If AMD releases a strong lineup in 2023 or 2024, I’ll be ready to swap it out as long as my monitor meets my required frame rate.

Considering a 7700x path, Intel offers the 13900k, though it might limit you to 3-4 years before needing an upgrade. The 9900k was expected to last longer, but unfortunately didn’t.

With current price cuts, 7700X is a very sensible choice for gaming. I mean yea there's a possibility that 7700X would still bottleneck a 4090, but since you won't go with 13900K, then there's no other option. Make sure you go with DDR5 2x16GB 6000, and not less.

I wouldn't go for the 7700x. You just spent money on a 4090 and you're thinking of another $1000 for a 4K display, but you'll save some on the CPU? That doesn't add up. This setup is better suited for a 7900x or 7950x. You've crossed into luxury territory—better invest wisely. The 7700x really doesn't fit here.

I disagree with those sources. Their reviews may not fully capture the situation.
