Massive FPS spikes, please help.
My sons computer setup is as follows:
R5 7600
RX 6700XT
32Gb DDR5
650W Asus PSU
MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI
He’s playing Fortnite and never had issues before. Suddenly every 30 seconds or so, he’s dropping to 5fps, completely unplayable. It will fall to these low FPS for about 10 seconds, then jump back up to around 200 FPS, only to drop again after another 30 seconds. It was fine yesterday.
I’ve checked the temperatures – both components stay under 60°C during those FPS drops. CPU and GPU usage are consistently in the mid-90s while gaming.
Drivers are current. Windows 11 is up to date.
Any troubleshooting suggestions?
Are you also monitoring clock speeds while examining temperatures? You understand that a drop in speed followed by acceptable temperatures, then clocks increasing again, leading to thermal problems once more, this cycle continues. Review both CPU and GPU clocks and temperatures. Also, examine background processes in the task manager and startup items. What is the PSU model of the Asus? Which CPU cooler is currently being used?
It's advised to keep some space for SSD operations, around 10-15%, to ensure proper trimming and maintain performance. A pagefile size of 100GB might be too high; consider limiting it to about 1GB initially and up to 2GB as a maximum. This helps prevent Windows or games from generating excessively large pagefiles over time.
