No one seems to have confirmed a consistent safe, stable high-temperature range for the i7 8700K. The Intel site mentions a maximum temperature, but whether that applies to short bursts or long-term use isn't clear.

I wouldn't feel good running it above 80 degrees for an extended time.

At high temperatures the CPU tends to reduce its performance to manage heat, so keeping it below that range is important. I usually aim for my 9900K to reach 80-85°C during short bursts and 70-75°C under sustained full load. This can be a bit too hot for me personally, but since the chip runs very hot, I have limited control over it. In Time Spy Extreme you should ideally avoid temperature spikes above about 70°C, because the focus is on testing the GPU rather than forcing the CPU to run at maximum capacity, leaving some buffer when rendering or stress tests.

Temperatures above 90-95°C are considered long-term limits provided you have stable voltages below 1.4V (ideally 1.32-1.35V). The short-term limit could be even greater. It's safe to ignore anything below 90°C.

95°C works for extended storage but for OCs aim for a cooler range, about 75–80°C, especially with higher voltage requirements.
