You should consider upgrading your GPU instead of the CPU or motherboard. Look for a used RX 570 or RX 580, or GTX 1060 on eBay.

They mentioned the GT 710 should be the first to go. They’re considering swapping it out for a budget used RX 470 or 570 and asking about its i3 model.

I already have a new GPU, it's an Radeon R9 390. My dad is getting me a mid-range tower case, which is why I was thinking about upgrading my CPU and motherboard. I was planning to buy an LGA 1155 ATX motherboard but couldn't find one for my PC.

I already have a new GPU, it's an Radeon R9 390. My dad is getting me a mid-range tower case, which is why I was thinking about upgrading my CPU and motherboard. I was planning to buy an LGA 1155 ATX motherboard but couldn't find one for my PC.

You can find affordable i5 2400 or 3470 chips for a solid performance boost, or opt for an i7 2600 if you're willing to invest a bit more. Don't forget to purchase some inexpensive thermal paste for the new CPU. Because you purchased the PC from eBay, you can also source additional components there as well.
