I own a small old Mac Mini with a 1.5 GHz Intel Core Solo, 2 GB RAM, and a WS blue 320 GB HDD. It’s showing poor picture quality when playing videos with VLC, regardless of the file format—MP4, AVI, or MKV. It doesn’t seem to care about the quality settings or file type. Is it because the processor isn’t powerful enough, or are there other issues at play? I just bought it to experiment with Mac OS.

The issue is clear. One core just doesn<|pad|>, it lacks the power to handle the load.

It's quite amusing how modern phones now boast stronger processors than older computers, isn't it?

I own a 2012 MacBook Air that runs any video flawlessly. The details are: CPU – Intel Core i5 @ 1.8GHz to 2.8GHz (TB), RAM – 4GB DDR3L @ 1600MHz, GPU – Intel HD Graphics 4000, Storage – 128GB SSD, Display – 13.3" TN screen – one of the top TN displays I've seen. NOTE: I used "with" instead of "without" when I meant it differently. This was pointed out by @ Wikiforce. Thanks, mate! I should review my posts before sharing again. My mistake.

I’ll ensure it’s not unimportant.

I don't know if this applies to your mac mini, I am a little tired and fading, btu I have a 2.66 core duo mac mini that I installed a crystal hddecoder in to run XBMC.. here is a forum post (I didn't read all the way through but it is a single) And here's installing crystal hd in an appletv. Which is similar. But not the same.

Thanks for the assistance, but you really want the Wi-Fi included and think the crystal HDDecoder could handle it.
