I resolved it and installed Mavericks. Now I'm attempting to erase the drive, but I can't reach the disk utility. I've used various keyboard shortcuts like alt + r, Windows key + r, Ctrl + r, yet nothing works. I'm unsure how to proceed with wiping the drive.

Windows keyboards function on Macs using driver emulation, which needs the operating system to be running. Use a keyboard designed for Macs to access the command+r shortcut.

Hi, if you don’t have the CD, you can contact Apple Care Support using your iMac’s serial number. They’ll send you a replacement for free. For a recovery image, you’ll need a CD or DVD; USB drives aren’t permitted.
