Mac Mini Late 2014 model
Hey everyone, thanks for your support! I’ve always been comfortable with PCs but recently got an old Mac Mini for my hobby space—just for streaming while I paint or chat on Discord. I know it’s a basic machine and feels really sluggish, even after multiple clean installs without any improvement. I’ve tried a full reset twice, but nothing changes much in speed. Over the years I’ve built several PCs and thought about adding an SSD, but for just wanting to run the essentials, it’s frustrating. Maybe this is normal or I’m doing something wrong, but I’d appreciate your help in checking it out. I hope I can still use it as a basic YouTube setup even if it’s not great. Thanks again! Here’s the link showing how slow it is.
Helps a ton btw! But a big pain is these lost apple software support. Easy enough to put latest os on it helps with usability Whats the temp on it? Its old and low spec but you can get ok usability out of it with a ssd and forcing a later osx on it
Hey! In late 2014 this setup was essentially a RAM-soldered rig with a 1.4GHz processor and just 4GB of memory—sounds like a basic build, likely paired with a slow mechanical hard drive. That’s two downsides: the limited RAM forces heavy swapping, especially on a slower drive, which really slows things down. Personally, I’d suggest swapping it out for an SSD—it would make a big difference. As someone who uses a Mac Mini 2014 (around 8GB), you’re already familiar with SATA and NVMe, though you’d need an adapter for later models. Unless you have an old, unused SSD or something cheap, I wouldn’t recommend spending much on this because your performance will be constrained by RAM. Still, it could work fine for basic tasks like browsing, listening to music, watching videos, and checking docs in a workshop or garage.
Thanks a lot for your response and details! It seems like I won’t need to invest much effort here, and I’ll likely keep the system running as it is until I discover another drive that will force me to make changes eventually.
It's great to hear you're learning about the OS. The latest version was as fresh as possible, though I didn't think about upgrading for better performance. As for temperatures, I'm not certain yet—I'll look into it next time I'm near it.
