Mac lost permanently, no chance to restore data.
I acquired a used Mac Mini M1 and chose to wipe it in the recovery options for a fresh setup. A warning appeared that an internet connection would be required to activate it again. I didn’t notice any problems and felt confident about the process. Now the device is non-functional. The startup disk is encrypted, and the password can’t unlock it. MacOS Recovery offers two restart options—one to the left (back) and one to the right (continue). It indicates there are no recoverable volumes. What should I do?
If the password fails (assuming you don’t have the vault encryption key), it will require a major effort to recover everything.
I believe it's because I wiped it, but I can't locate the utility anymore. The two 'programs' available from recovery are choose startup disk: offers 1 disk, I can't unlock Recovery: your Mac has no volumes to recover.
I’ll be straight with you: I own the M1 and almost every macbook model. Even with the USB drive, you’ll still face the main issue—losing your file vault key or password. Whenever a developer tells me they messed up and need the recovery key, I hand it over from the Keychain I set up for backup. The erase feature simply deletes your files and gives you a brand new Mac to start fresh. But it doesn’t actually help recover lost data.
He wants this, he just purchased it but there are no files available for recovery. However, the system suggests reinstalling from the beginning, which means... it looks like you might have misunderstood.
I went ahead and selected erase all. It seems to have fixed my issue! I’m using the same familiar menu options—restore, reinstall, Safari, disk utility at Haraikomono. I don’t want file recovery; I just need a clean system.
