M.2 to Thunderbolt?
M.2 to Thunderbolt?
Hey guys, I've done a bit of research but couldn't conclude. I know Linus finds these weird adapter connectors like a PCI-E to M.2, but I was wondering if there is a such thing as a male M.2 connector to female thunderbolt. I think it's plausible unless a regular M.2 on a motherboard doesn't have enough bandwidth to rate at thunderbolt capable. The scenario is that I have a mini-itx board with 2 m.2 slots, 1 m.2 ssd, and 0 PCI-E slots available since the only x16 slot is used but a graphics card. I would like to use this secondary m.2 slot as a way to plug in my thunderbolt hub. Just curious, Thanks
It seems you're questioning whether you're missing out on options. The only PCI-e card I've noticed (mostly x4) is from Asus, and it's possible you're not getting what you need with an M.2 slot. You might have overlooked a Thunderbolt-enabled board if you were hoping for a dock connection.
TB3 is fully embedded within the setup, and even specialized TB3 PCIe cards are made for specific manufacturers. The motherboard must support an extra connector for the card to connect, alongside the standard PCIe link. Therefore, it’s not feasible. You’d have to swap the motherboard for one that includes built-in TB3 support.
