M.2 SATA slot compatible with NVMe M.2 ports

Hello, I just placed an order for an M.2 SATA SSD. My issue is that my server motherboard lacks an M.2 slot, and I searched for PCIe to M.2 adapters but found NVMe options instead of the expected M.2 SATA. This is my first time switching from SATA and IDE. I’m curious if an M.2 SATA drive would fit in an NVMe one, or if using an M.2 SATA would slow down the performance. The SSD I bought is 520 MB/s.

The adapter explicitly states compatibility with both, so yes. If it doesn’t mention dual support, it won’t work. SATA remains SATA, and M.2 is merely a connector; the adapter would just transmit the signal unchanged.

This device links to a PCIe port, though for SATA SSDs you must also connect it to a SATA interface. It also supports NVMe SSDs which utilize the PCIe connection.

Your server is quite old. If you plan to boot from an SSD, it might not work well—especially with Intel 4000 chips, as older models can't support PCIe SSDs.

I'm not sure, I don't work with server hardware and I'm not familiar with components from before the Intel 4000 series (when M.2 was introduced).

Confidently it will work with an Intel 5520 chipset and a processor from the 4000 series.
