I have a brief inquiry. I'm attempting to fit an M.2 adapter into my Asus Maximus VIII Hero motherboard, but after installation the PC keeps restarting without a postcode. Once removed, everything works again. I thought PCIe compatibility should handle different slot types like X4 or X8, so placement shouldn't be an issue. Do I need to adjust BIOS settings or treat it as a storage device? Appreciate any guidance, even if it seems simple. I've also installed a GeForce GTX1080 in my x16 slot. Thanks!

You’ve hit the limit on PCIe lanes. With a M.2 drive already installed, you’re essentially maxed out. Why go for more M.2 storage? Do you really want those extra speeds? If it’s just for gaming and everyday tasks, you won’t feel any difference compared to a standard SSD or M.2 drive.

Thanks for your quick response. I intended to use it for transcoding and storing encoding data for my videos since I’m running low on space on my internal M.2 slot. So, with the current setup, can I get this up and running as planned? Also, the metadata for my Plex server is already stored on the same internal drive.

I don't agree with jaslion. Having just one M.2 NVMe drive and a single GPU installed won't make all your PCIe slots unusable. The biggest issue could be that your GPU is downgraded from a higher speed to PCIe 3.0 x8 instead of x16. Have you confirmed the M.2 drive you're using is an NVMe device, not a SATA one via the M.2 slot?

Using the NVMe in the lower port should resolve the issue, and swapping the GPU to the lower slot at X16 would also work. If problems persist, it’s likely a BIOS configuration problem.
