Lowering Oc heat
Lowering Oc heat
Hello everyone,
Last year I purchased an 8700k with the goal of beginning overclocking for fun. The processor performs adequately for my needs (gaming). After reviewing common articles, watching YouTube videos, and reading forums, I started experimenting with different configurations.
I opted to begin using all settings from the "ASUS MAXIMUS X HERO - Overclocking Test and Guide 8700K" guide, adjusting the AVX offset to 1 instead of 3. I selected those configurations because they represent the maximum adjustments needed for a full overclock.
When I set the CPU multiplier to 48 and ran Cinebench, Prime95 (latest version), Prime95 (26.6), and ASUS RealBench, the results were satisfactory. Benchmark scores stayed within the expected range, with stress tests reaching an average of 85 and occasionally peaking at 95. Under stress testing, temperatures climbed to about 85°C, while under normal conditions they remained around 80-85°C. Switching Kraken to performance mode instead of silent mode reduced temperatures by roughly 5 degrees without causing any stability problems.
If I set the multiplier to 50, Prime95 (latest) immediately hit 100°C, Prime95 (26.6) reached 90-95°C with a blue screen appearing in 30 seconds, and RealBench Stresstest completed after a one-minute run but was stopped. A Cinebench test with a 90 spike also showed the benchmark around 85°C. Interestingly, changing Kraken to performance mode didn’t significantly affect temperatures.
Now, my question is:
a) Should I try different lower Vcore settings?
b) Should I enable AI overclock tuner and adjust settings manually?
c) Could I experiment with various LLC levels?
d) Should I replace the thermal paste?
Each adjustment requires a night of work, and my time is limited. I’m still unsure if 48 is the right choice.
I’m doing this just for the fun of it, aiming for around 50°C, not concerned if 49 is an option. Also, I managed to set my CPU Core/Cache Current Limit Max to 255.75, which is higher than the typical 255.50. Is that unusual?

i own an i7 6700k with a corsair h100i pro rgb. at stock i run at 16c idle and 49c max. i can overclock to 4.9ghz stable at 1.50v, idle is 28c and max temp reaches 58c. last month i faced an issue where my temps matched urs's, then i replaced the pump in my h100 v2 which fixed the problem and lowered the temps.
i also faced an issue with the bracket holding the cpu into the socket, which was slightly bent. i'm not sure how it happened. this caused my heatsink to no longer sit properly, leading to temperature spikes. i replaced the bracket, and it worked fine from then on. i tried placing a long razor blade across the cpu and over the new bracket, which helped the cpu sit higher so the heatsink could align correctly. just thought i'd leave that as an example for others to try.
Absolutely, the default setting ensures everything works smoothly at 70-75 degrees. When idle, the CPU temperatures return to between 30-35, both on idle and in default mode.
yes, that's exactly what i'd do. occasionally there are things you wouldn't normally inspect, and that might lead to serious issues.
