Hey, I’ve been facing a pretty bothersome issue lately. On light tasks my computer runs smoothly, but once I turn it on for any serious game—like the latest titles or even some older ones such as NBA 2K14 and GTA 5 with a few Tropico 6 games—I notice massive FPS drops every minute or so. My temperature readings keep showing max values of 255, which seems odd since that’s a high number for most sensors. I’m technically inclined, so I know those numbers can be misleading.

I suspect the overheating is coming from the CPU, but my temp monitors are reporting the highest possible value. I’ve upgraded my power supply to a good one, but it still struggles to keep up with the load, even when my RAM and GPU aren’t heavily used. My 95 TDP FX 6300 is running at full capacity while using 100% of it in games like 2K14, whereas my system has only about 50W draw on average.

So far, I’ve ruled out bad sensors and overheating components, but I’m still trying to figure out what else could be causing this. I checked forums, but nothing matches exactly what I’m experiencing. Any tips or advice would be really helpful!

FX-6300 at full load with 50W power, or reading temperatures around 255°C, might benefit from different reporting tools. It seems straightforward to keep it cool at its standard speed, which makes me think about how much overclocking is actually needed. I’m not sure if the FPS drop is due to performance issues, but it’s clear these processors aren’t delivering strong initial results. The MSI board you’re using isn’t top-tier either; I wouldn’t risk pushing it beyond 4.6GHz unless the hardware can handle it. Even then, I doubt it will perform well right out of the box. The software you’re using probably gives misleading data. If you want better performance, a fresh OS might help, but honestly, the core issue is the low IPC of these chips—no amount of tweaking will fix that.

Windows was reinstalled, and the performance issues you mentioned are valid. The 2k14 processor and GTA V should handle it fine. Regarding software, all applications are reporting consistently. I've tested several versions, including version 7. You're also asking about overclocking, but the board isn't set up for that, so it won't affect performance.

I talked about overclocking to boost that CPU's performance, especially since I own the same model. If you notice it getting too hot, focus on cooling first. GTAV on PC can be demanding, mainly due to graphics settings and resolution. My kids use 4K, and GTAV really pushes it at 2700x with an RTX 2060.
