Low LOD and Pop-in
Low LOD and Pop-in
Hello,
In December of the previous year, most of my games experienced LOD problems and some had pop-in issues. For instance, in BF4 and BF5, certain elements like red bars, fences, and even buildings would only load when I got very close. This is really distracting and I’m unsure how to fix it.
I’ve tested various GPUs, reinstalled Windows, adjusted the overclock settings on both GPU and CPU, and even tried running games on a different SSD to check if that was the cause. Temperatures seem normal on the CPU and GPU, and other metrics like memory usage appear typical.
Here are my specifications:
CPU: I7-6700k @ 4.5Ghz
MOBO: MSI z170a gaming m5
GPU: EVGA GTX 1080ti SC2
Cooler: NZXT Kraken x62
PSU: Corsair RM550x
SSDs: 525gb MX500 (Boot drive), 1tb Samsung 950 evo.
The only suggestion I have is that a more powerful PSU might help. From other discussions, some people recommended replacing the PSU. If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
I recently increased my CPU frequency to 3.1 GHz instead of the usual 3.0 GHz and noticed texture pop-ins. After lowering it back to 3.0 GHz, those pop-ins vanished.
Shot in low light, but consider lowering your CPU frequency slightly to test its effect. Try 4.4 or 4.3, then 4.2 or 4.1. If that doesn’t help, reduce your graphics settings a bit lower than their current level. If overclocking the GPU was involved, also try reducing it.
Make sure you test each of these options individually to eliminate them one by one. This isn’t a guaranteed solution, but it offers some initial troubleshooting steps. If none work, at least you’ve narrowed down the possibilities and can reset everything as needed.
Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately, none of these options have been successful. The alternative I have in mind is that the problem might be related to the motherboard, like a faulty PCI-E port.
Well at least you've eliminated them.
Do you think this concept comes from something you read online? If yes, I wouldn't assume it's the problem.
If these texture pop-ins are minor or moderate, it's likely you're not alone in experiencing them. This probably just reflects how the game is designed.
If they're major and obvious, please note it and share here. I'll let you know if I encounter the same issue.
What games do you play? Let's check if we both own them. You can pick a game we both have, record a short clip (about 30-45 seconds), and I'll do the same in the same spot. We'll compare to see if the pop-ins happen on my end.
This would help determine if these pop-ins are universal.
What games are you playing? I don't own BF4 or BF5, but I do have BF1.
Alternatively, you could play a part of the campaign in BF4 and then watch someone else's game on YouTube at the exact spot where you notice the pop-ins, just to compare. Your choice.
I've got a video of BF4 demonstrating some of the issues I'm facing. It's not the highest quality, but you can clearly see the problems I'm encountering.
The challenges in BF5 and, if installed, BF1, are very similar.
Thanks for the assistance.
I reviewed the video and it clearly reflects a typical problem with the game. Pay attention to the 1:29 point where the two helicopters appear. To resolve this kind of glitch in BF4, increasing the mesh quality might help. It's uncertain if this will fully fix the issue, but that is the recommended setting for BF4 and BF1. This problem often relates to window roof pop-ins, which is what Mesh Quality addresses. Try setting it to Ultra and observe the effect. It could slightly impact FPS, though probably not significantly—especially with your i7/1080ti setup. You might see around 3-5 frames per second.
If you wish to conduct more testing, playing a BF1 campaign mission would be ideal since I have access to it. I can't recreate BF4's content, so finding a similar video is the best I can do. It seems your mesh quality is already at Ultra, and adjusting it might resolve this.
Please remember to reference any part of my message so I know you've received my response. I almost didn’t realize you replied. Also, make sure to restart the game after changing any graphics settings.
EDIT: I also discovered another video demonstrating this exact problem on someone else's PC, reinforcing my belief it's a game-related issue...
Even his title suggests a low-level detail and texture pop-up problem. Observe how weapons (or sandbags, whatever ground objects there are) vanish and reappear—just like in your clip. I’m now considering that Ultra mesh quality might not solve your problems because the game itself is affected.
Additionally, in the comments of this video, it appears more players are experiencing the same issue in BF4... even on console.
One final note: outside what you see in your video, your gameplay looks great. To me, this appears to be a minor, common concern.
Sorry for the delayed response, I'm in exam season.
I have a clip of BF1 but missed the first Italian mission (forgot the title). The Hellfighters mission was tough to demonstrate because of screen shake and explosions.
At the 16-second point, you notice the graves appearing and disappearing when zooming in and out. Likewise, the building's texture fluctuates between low and high quality.
I think the main issue might be related to my PC rather than the game itself—GTA 5. In the clip, shadows, buildings, rocks, and other elements either appear or improve in quality as I move closer.
For BF1, graphics were top-notch, while in GTA everything was at maximum or very high settings.
Thanks for your help, it means a lot.
Hey there, this is pretty typical with video games. If you pay attention, the graves don’t vanish once you get closer to them. This problem mainly comes down to draw distance. It’s something that shows up in many games and is well understood by developers.
You’re referring to GTA 5 right now. It’s my favorite game. Everything I see in your GTA 5 video matches exactly what I experience when playing it. Check out this gameplay clip I made last week—it highlights the same issue you’re facing. I didn’t make it just to demonstrate; I wanted to show how my frame rate is higher in a solo lobby compared to a fully crowded one.
Scroll to the 0:19 point and observe the pop-ups everywhere. Shadows, trees, distant buildings, etc. This is the game itself because I’ve mastered its graphics settings. Even when I set everything to Ultra, it still happens. As seen in this video where I pushed all settings to their limits...
The game is responsible. Like with other titles you play, it’s the game’s fault. There’s no permanent fix, only a way to reduce how far away you can get before this happens (in GTA 5, it’s distance scaling and extended distance scaling). I notice these pop-ups often appear, especially in GTA 5. After playing for years, it becomes more manageable. I used to find it super bothersome, but now it’s less of an issue.
As I said before, one possible solution is adjusting the distance scaling and extended distance scaling settings (which are advanced options in GTA 5). This might help a bit, though it won’t eliminate the problem entirely. Be aware that these two graphics tweaks, especially extended distance scaling, can significantly affect your frame rate.
You should also consider turning on High Detail Streaming While Flying in GTA 5. You’ll find this useful for reducing pop-ins, as described above. I usually keep it off because it affects city visuals, but I remember it didn’t make much difference during testing. Small pop-ups are inevitable, just like the photo shows.
