It seems the game has changed its difficulty significantly, making it feel more intense than expected. I'm not sure what makes it a horror experience, but it definitely feels different from the lighter games you enjoyed. The version you played was only halfway through, which might explain why it felt less intense. Regarding compatibility, it's possible the game isn't optimized for older systems like Windows 7. As for beating it, I haven’t had the chance yet—personal experience matters! For the other games you mentioned, Penumbra and RE 0-3 are challenging, but I’d be happy to hear your thoughts once you try them.

FNAF 1 and 2 handle the mood nicely, especially with solid audio (good headphones help). FNAF 3 and Sister Location fall short, while FNAF 4 does a decent job of atmosphere but the scares feel predictable and not truly frightening. There are also some solid RPG Maker titles: Ib, The Witches House, Ao Oni, Misao. You might want to check out the available Corpse Party versions.

It's also a puzzle game, though I don't remember it being one where the route to the next goal was concealed. You just keep exploring until it becomes clear, then tackle the challenges that appear.

Competitive Overwatch is something that really unsettles me when an unskilled Hanzo joins my squad. Laughing doesn’t help, but the remastered edition on Steam feels genuinely intense. It could be worth checking out if you manage to snag a good price. Taking on Chris at higher difficulty brings a feeling of powerlessness, forcing you to manage your ammo while facing overwhelming challenges. I haven’t played many modern horror titles, but I think it’s a solid pick from the genre’s pioneers.

Resident Evil 4 is a solid game I think. If it feels too intense, try 5 first, then go back to 4 later. It seems 4 is more frightening than 5.

Did it work? It might have been 7 with some issues I faced. I had problems installing it and the game or Windows would crash. I’ll try again later. Did you need to adjust any compatibility options? Maybe I just didn’t bother to check harder. I really loved version 4—it scared me on the first try, but I kept playing until I got through halfway and stopped for months before finishing. lol Two words: the chanting.

GOG has the first Corpse Party. It's also on 3DS in a remastered/redone version and the original PSP version is on PSN on Vita. There's also a sequel that was released on Vita.

If you need steam, try searching "horror" and browse the videos. Several titles offer multiple clips to experience the game. Exploring dozens of games from 2015 onward could be beneficial.

We don’t usually visit Ravenholm? What do you think? It really leans into the horror experience with a first-person perspective and an impressive soundtrack. The developer mentioned it’s accessible for beginners while delivering psychological tension through atmosphere rather than just jump scares. It captures the vibe of that chapter perfectly. Half Life 2 truly stands out as a milestone in PC gaming, and everyone should try it at least once—especially since the creator expressed a love for older titles. I can’t imagine it being a bad choice at all.
