I recently acquired a high-end rig from someone else, and the components are significantly more capable than what I'm accustomed to. I'm noticing elevated CPU temperatures during gameplay—ranging from low to mid 80s in Modern Warfare and high 80s in demanding situations on Path of Exile. I'm playing in 2K resolution, and the CPU stays idle around 50°C. I'm wondering if it's safe to keep running at these levels for more than a few hours (over six hours), what the upper limit is for my processor, whether a different cooling solution would be necessary, and what steps should I take if these temperatures become an issue. My room temperature is roughly 70°C, which might be relevant. Here are the details: I9 10900kf 2080 Ti ASUS RogStrix 32GB (3600MHz), G.Skill Trident Z 1TB M.2 Intel 660P 750 Gold plus EVGA GA Be Quiet! Rock Pro 4 cooler. It looks like things are running hotter than expected. The maximum safe temperature is 100°C, and the PC will shut down if it hits that point. You might experience reduced performance because of heat and CPU throttling. I recommend re-seating the cooler first. Then thoroughly clean both the CPU and cooler with isopropyl alcohol, and apply a generous amount of thermal paste in the center of the CPU—about the size of a chickpea—to ensure even coverage.
I purchased a Be Qui et! Dark Rock Pro 4 for my i9 10900k and installed it, but after roughly two minutes of use I needed a 360mm AIO. With the AIO in place, the i9 idled at 30c and ran smoothly at 60c. The main reason for cooling was TVB, which kept the CPU performing similarly to a 5.1 overclock. To achieve better performance, a 5.2 or 5.3ghz overclock is necessary, and the i9 handles high clocks very well, making thermal throttling the only concern. It doesn’t affect gameplay much, though it does in some benchmarks. The i9 10900k works best when kept cool or pushed to 5.2ghz or higher. Restricting it to the cooling capacity of a Dark Rock Pro 4 won’t help.
