i purchased three items from kinguin without needing to contact microsoft support twice; two times i had to wait about five minutes, but there were no problems afterward.

You already use powerful tools like Blender, Inkscape, GIMP, and Krita. Linux works well for you too! I believe purchasing a budget Windows key from eBay or similar sites could be a good option.

Ask your friend about his willingness to pay for just the operating system, keeping the actual price secret until the last moment. Some might prefer not to spend any money or need official CD keys.
