Using OEM keys on personal-built computers goes against the license conditions. While it might happen, getting caught or being reported is unlikely. Just avoid selling the machine in this way.

The mention of that word here doesn't fit the situation. Purchasing from eBay is a clear negative. Keys are breaking MS ToS and sellers are breaking eBay ToS.

Absolutely, that's exactly why I was inquiring. Avoid purchasing questionable items.

Possible, though unlikely, if the key comes from a volume pack, MS may be able to blacklist the entire pack.

Used Kinguin with a non-functional key. Received a refund after contacting them. No issues encountered otherwise. Over the years, I've bought five keys from them and only experienced this key problem once.

You asked about the shield service and its potential downsides. It's wise to consider the costs involved when seeking extra protection.

I didn't take any action. I reached out via chat and they changed the charge, requesting me to buy another key if needed—something I did. I see what you mean about protection. It might just have been a coincidence. I managed to get the first key, filed a complaint, and then repurchased the second one within roughly 20 minutes. They had an obvious path for doing so.

Others have mentioned these options aren't reliable. Some users shared experiences of receiving faulty motherboards from OEM systems, which led to extracting product keys. The results weren't always successful. For those looking for a safer path, I recommend purchasing the genuine Windows Professional version for $80 off at sites like Newegg or Amazon. Alternatively, consider using Windows 10 without activation—it only shows a watermark and lacks customization, which can be frustrating. If you're open to risk, buying from eBay or Kinguin might work, but be aware you could break Microsoft's terms of service, just as much as getting cracked software.

I purchased items from Kinguin and G2A so far, with no issues after two years. If you have sufficient funds and dislike buying them at those places, then avoid it.
