I discovered this discussion and am curious if others have tried it before. The link provided points to a relevant thread on the Raspberry Pi forum. Regarding your second question, using a USB-to-serial adapter on the host machine could potentially transmit BIOS/EFI/POST information over that connection—though compatibility depends on the hardware and protocol support. A male-to-male USB cable might work if you adapt it for serial signaling, but ensure the correct protocol is used. This could offer a cost-effective alternative to a dedicated IP KVM module.

Most motherboards include a header, but it's not always necessary. You might be looking for an alternative solution like the link provided.

I'll attempt this now. I could also test it using an ODroid U2, as it's more dependable and compact according to my experience.

Also if you just want remote reboot functionality, this is what I use for my desktop: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Swann-120-Volt-...1000135207

I was considering that an unlisted header could be my best option. I need console redirection for the BIOS/post setup. It's an ASRock Z68M ITX board I've converted into a PFSense machine, and I want to keep it headless if maintenance is required later. The thread I found seems relevant but might depend on that specific serial header being present. Maybe checking the PCB labels could help identify it.

Absolutely, I'd include that as well.

maybe this highlighted section is serial, even though the connectors look like 10-pin. The header appears to be 12-pin, which doesn't match the listing. It might actually be a USB-style header instead of a traditional serial port connector.

It seems like a TPM header was detected, though it wasn't included in the expected list.

It usually costs around $400, but this item looks big and not very stylish, yet it should work fine!

this is exactly what i'd want to do, but i dont think there is a serial connection on this board this uses GPIO for a 'reset' switch http://blog.macronet.fi/2016/02/20/raspb...emote-kvm/
