I selected the 1600AF instead of the 2600. The latter is roughly 40% pricier for essentially the same product.

Sure! That's exactly what I was thinking. You should still go with the 3300x version.

1700 would feel the same in gaming as the 1600AF, but you'd have 8 cores.

The 1600 boosts IPC slightly, which is noticeable. The 1700 remains sluggish without a solid overclock, typically around 3.2ghz or less.

It's accurate. I didn't anticipate that.

It seems like you're weighing options for a GPU. A 3300X provides solid single-core performance, though it's a 4c/8t CPU. In contrast, the 1600AF is a 6c/12t CPU and can be overclocked effectively. I've had success boosting a 1600AF to around 4.1ghz with a Wraith Prism cooler, achieving scores close to a stock 2600X.

In a broader view, my 14nm 1600 non-AF at 3.8ghz runs smoothly across all my games on a TV. I recently posted a discussion about upgrading, and the feedback was clear—just skip it. I’m in line with @steelo on that point.

At this stage it seems the CPU won't limit his enjoyment of the games he wants to play, provided he gets a good GPU.

I suggest the 3100 for mostly online gaming, since those games often demand maximum single-core performance
