You can try contacting Microsoft support or checking your account settings to retrieve the serial number. If you have access to your Windows installation media, it may also help.

Your system may keep starting, so you can try using some free VB Scripts online to regain access.

Windows 10 is running slowly after a recent formatting, and you don’t have a license for the software.

Make sure your Microsoft account is linked to the Windows 10 setup before trying to reinstall without a key. Sign in with the previous account, then use the activation troubleshooter in the Windows 10 Settings app to reactivate the system. Remember to install the identical version of Windows 10 you originally had, such as matching the same edition if you upgraded from Win 7 Home to Win 10 Home.

don’t have a Microsoft account, I haven’t logged in before on the site. I need to return to Windows 7 Home Premium, but I want to use apps that don’t work with Windows 10. I’d like to reinstall Windows 7 Home fresh without my license sticker working. My laptop is a gateway, and there’s no support since it was bought by Acer—so they don’t respond to my emails about getting the Windows license back.

You're facing a tough situation here. Third-party sellers on platforms like Amazon and eBay might still offer Windows 7 keys, but be aware that support for the operating system ends soon after three months. Connecting it online afterward could pose security risks. Many professionals are limited in their help, especially since Microsoft stopped providing consumer support in January 2020. They often rely on online searches for solutions, which can be frustrating when the official fixes aren't available. It's understandable wanting to keep up with software updates, but technology evolves quickly and sometimes users need OS upgrades to run necessary programs.

I mentioned earlier that linking your installation to a Microsoft account by changing your account type can simplify the process. If you do that, just reinstall Windows 10 Home and log in with your Microsoft credentials—activation should follow. If not, purchasing a physical copy becomes necessary. There are no other legitimate alternatives... Before anyone else (except @Firewrath9 who got me first) suggests buying a cheap key online, I want to clarify that such keys aren't legal. They’re often stolen from old PCs or are OEM licenses only valid on the original device. Of course, they might still function, but Microsoft doesn’t profit from resold OEM keys, so it’s not a proper purchase method.
