In my current setup, I believe our router from 2014 is the slowest and most basic option. It came with us when we switched to NBN in Australia. We're using Fixed Wireless technology. Under ideal conditions, I can achieve around 5 megabytes per second, and my typical speedtest ping stays between 30 to 45 milliseconds. To simplify things, I often play online games, and when I'm alone at home my ping drops to a comfortable 42 milliseconds. When everyone is in the house, even a single user browsing YouTube can push my ping up to 80 milliseconds or more. It seems our router might be prioritizing other tasks over gaming, causing unpredictable ping changes. If we need to upgrade for better game performance, I have a budget of about A$400. Please keep in mind we must always connect our home phone to the router/modem and ensure it supports NBN functionality.
Do you have a box linking to the roof dish and that box also connects to the router? (I live in Aus and my NBN is poor too)
Reach out to your ISP for a list of compatible modems, which should be the initial step unless you already have strong speeds through the Ethernet port. Consider routers priced above A$300 if you require features, speed,<|pad|>, otherwise expect poor performance. The modem captures the wall signal and converts it into a usable internet router, distributing the internet connection to all connected devices.
