I’ve always wanted greater control over my operating system. Linux seems safer and lighter than Windows. Even though I’m very new, I only tried Linux once. Where should I start learning more?

I’m not sure about specific resources, but I found that Google can be helpful and starting with Ubuntu was a smart move since it was available on CD for free. I learned Linux commands by practicing on Windows XP and then adapting them to BASH on Linux. Ubuntu offers a smooth entry point into Linux because it’s fully graphical and polished, while still keeping the underlying command-line tools. Linux Mint or Debian are also solid options, as they share the same base system as Ubuntu. I supplemented my learning by reading books on BASH and Linux during the summer at the library. A friend from high school really inspired me—by middle school he was managing a WoW server and building websites. We worked together on computers, swapping OSes, which helped me gain hands-on experience. Now I apply what I know about Linux in practical ways and rely on Google for the rest. Just remember, Linux security depends on your choices; it’s secure out of the box but requires careful setup. Don’t be intimidated—Linux is easy to learn if you’re willing to put in the time.

I need a Linux distribution that mimics Windows visually but still offers a powerful command-line experience.

Ubuntu Studio appears very appealing, maybe I'll consider getting one for audio projects.

I previously created a tutorial on how to begin, and you can find it in my signature. It may not be the most comprehensive one, but I aimed to include all the essential points.

I followed the same steps I was taking. I created a VM using VMware and tried various operating systems. Up to now, I've checked Linux Mint and Ubuntu. I'm not satisfied with the path Microsoft is heading down, so I'm exploring other options.

Some distributions focus specifically on this. Almost every distribution lets you customize the look to resemble a standard Windows 7, 8 or 10 using themes: http://www.noobslab.com/2015/09/do-you-l...-love.html

However, this won’t halt Microsoft’s data collection efforts, or will it? It could still happen as part of moving toward a future without Microsoft.

I understand the privacy-focused discussions about telemetry, but it’s important to recognize that all providers monitor user activity continuously. Whether it's Microsoft, Google, Amazon, or banks, tracking occurs regardless of your preferences. Even without a rewards card, you’re still being observed to support their services and improve customer experiences.
