Looking for ways to improve your system?
yeah but i when i upgraded my CPU i bought an ddr4 board since i didnt want to buy overly expensive ddr5 ram and i dont plan on changing my mainboard anytime soon just to use ddr5.
It's fascinating how much longer my previous computer has lasted. Technology moves so fast, and even items that seem old can become outdated quickly.
The processor has solid speeds, making it a reasonable purchase at this cost. However, be aware that no current system supports DDR4 memory, so this setup isn’t future-proof. You’ll need to replace the RAM in a few years if you plan to upgrade. Unless you’re committed to the same platform for another 7 to 8 years, you won’t be able to use it that way long-term.
I just upgraded my CPU and motherboard in December last year, so I’ll keep it for a while. The RAM sticks are the final part left from my old PC that I haven’t upgraded due to budget constraints. This month I got my 3080, and now it’s time to upgrade my RAM. Since I bought an DDR4-only board, I’ll stick with it for at least a few years.
It doesn't make sense when ballistix is more affordable and it can handle those with a basic 4000 cl16 OC. Also, the 4000 cl18 ripjaws v, 3200 cl14 bins, and viper steel 4400 cl19 are not worth the price—especially since micron rev B16Gb is likely cheaper. You might find some decent 4000 cl18 rams at lower costs, mainly the cheaper ripjaws models. From a timing perspective, it seems like you're aiming for around 4500 units, but expect about 4800 at best. Cooling will be crucial; even though ICS can handle it at 1.65V, going above 1.7V brings degradation risks. If you're using high-bin rams, you'll likely need to overclock, as these parts often don't ship ready for stable speeds. Stick with standard kits unless you're pushing past 5000MHz, where 1.6V becomes more practical. For best results, aim for lower voltages and extra cooling if you plan to run at higher speeds.
Purchase the 150€ CL19 DDR4 4400mhz RAM, it offers great performance for its price, and Gskill Ripjaws is a reliable manufacturer.
Thanks for the detailed post. I had to learn some things I didn’t know, and honestly I’m not sure if I got everything right. Luckily, you suggested it since I was unaware of my own knowledge about RAM sticks. Without OC you recommended 3200 CL 16—right? Because for these models there aren’t many Ballistix options at good prices, so I had to pick from the ones you listed. Which one would you recommend?
