Working on that. Been playing Half Life 1 for the last year a half. It's an on and off thing. I play a bit, then stop playing, then play again, then stop playing. Half Life 1 is really boring. lol Maybe it's because it's the sort of game most enjoyable if you played it as a kid (hence the memories). A bit like Halo Combat Evolved. But I seriously don't understand how people like Half Life so much. From what I have played so far, there are no characters you can emphasise with or understand. There's just Gordan Freeman who never talks and then there's the pedophile G-Man. {I guess it gets better after a while - don't spoil the storyline. I intend to finish it eventually}
The most compelling response here is definitely the ones shared. Even with questionable choices, the games stand out. I only recall The Elder Scrolls, Metro, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Stalker and Dark Souls for their well-crafted narratives, immersive worlds, and memorable characters. They offer a wealth of depth.
You haven't experienced all the titles well enough to grasp why fans love them. HL games aren't dull (perhaps Blue Shift), even with some old-school visuals by today's standards—it's far from uninteresting. Spending a year and a half on one game isn't the ideal approach. If you're a dedicated player of certain games, that can still shape your perspective, but it doesn't turn a game into something boring. I've played both Halo and Half-Life, and both are excellent series. Halo 4 was just "meh."
Borderlands 2 features an engaging narrative and amusing characters.
I don’t care about the visuals. I still enjoy Age of Empires and Battle for Middle Earth. What bothers me most about HL1 is how little action there is. It feels flat and incomplete. There’s no compelling story or meaningful characters beyond Freeman, who lacks depth.
Many recall HL1 with a sentimental touch. During its era, the title excelled and advanced the genre past Doom and Quake, yet its narrative and character growth fall short when compared to later titles. A substantial shift exists between the stories and personalities of HL1 and HL2.
