Looking for the best deals on B450 and B550 boards. Need help picking between them.
I'm planning to upgrade to a Ryzen 3100x soon and need some guidance on choosing a board. I'm targeting around $200 and looking at the B550 and B450 options for a good balance of price and performance. I'm also considering a 1600 AF and want to know which one is better compared to the 3100x.
Cheapest option for B450 varies by your local market. Comparing R3 3100 and R5 1600 AF, I’d choose the 3100 for its faster clock speeds.
B550-A Pro or TUF B550-Plus are great options. I’d skip the B450 if you can afford it, but consider B450 Pro4 or similar models. For most users, the 3100 offers better single-core performance unless you need heavy multithreading. Keep in mind the 1600AF won’t fit with a B550 board.
The 3100 performs better in gaming, while the 1600 AF has some drawbacks but offers a higher core count that could be useful in other scenarios. For a 3100 setup, it wouldn't be recommended to go for B550—it's an extremely expensive chipset. B450 appears to be a more solid alternative, or if you have room, a 3300 might offer better speed.
In fact, I see your point now. If you're sticking with the B550, it seems your budget can only cover around $3,100. That makes sense—opt for a reliable B450 board and a 3600 instead. Unless you're comfortable upgrading your CPU in a couple of years, when AAA games become more demanding and 6C/12T becomes standard.
The 3100 is 4C/8T. The 3000g version is 2C/4T. If you locate one at its MSRP, opt for the 3300X with a more affordable motherboard. Basically, the most budget-friendly new B450 board is the Asrock HDV R4, which works well for that chip. You could also consider the Gigabyte DS3H if you need four RAM slots, though it's slightly pricier.
