Looking for some advice on how to put together a budget-friendly TV box that plays in HD quality?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to build a cheap Home Theater PC (HTPC) so I can watch DVDs, Blu-rays, and streaming stuff like Netflix on my new 1080p TV. Since this is my first time building one, I need some help figuring out what parts are really important for smooth movies without spending too much money. Specifically, here are a few questions: Processor: Is an Intel G4600 enough to decode 1080p stuff, or should I get something else? Graphics: Can the built-in graphics handle 1080p, or do I need a separate GPU card? Operating System: I heard the G4600 works with Windows 10, but can it run Linux well for an HTPC setup? Case and Form Factor: Do I really need low-profile cases for these PCs, or are regular ones fine without problems? RAM: What is the minimum amount of memory needed for smooth performance in this case? Any tips or suggestions would be super helpful. Thanks a lot in advance! Best regards, Alina
Welcome to the forums! Is an Intel G4600 good enough to watch 1080p movies, or should you pick a new processor instead? You have a Kabylake CPU released back in 2013 right now, so are you really sticking with something that old for your home theater PC in 2025? Can the built-in graphics card play 1080p smoothly, or do you need an extra dedicated GPU? With an integrated GPU, you should be able to handle 1080p playback fine. Do you really think low-profile cases are mandatory for HTPCs, or can you use standard ones without any trouble? No, they aren't essential. How much RAM do you actually need for smooth performance here? I'm pretty sure since you asked about the G4600, you probably already have 8GB of memory, so you'll be okay there too. But as we discussed before, Windows 10 support is going to die down around late next year, and if you want full Windows 11 support later on, you should buy better hardware now. I'm building a cheap home theater PC just to play DVDs, Blu-rays, and Netflix on my new 1080p TV. Since this is my first build, could you please guide me on what parts are actually needed for smooth 1080p performance without wasting money? You should be sure to add some helpful info from this thread when asking, like *How To Ask For New Build Advice*. First things first: respect others! This is just a copy of an Animal's advice post so that people can use it here and on the CPU forums. I made it because there are too many upgrade requests these days and I think... you know where to find good tips from other users at forums. If you have ideas about specific parts, list them like this: CPU, CPU cooler, motherboard, RAM, SSD/HDD, GPU, power supply unit, case, operating system, monitor. Also tell me how old your power supply is besides the make and model. Finally, move the thread from the Entertainment section to the Systems section for better organization.
