Looking for PC upgrade advice? Considering an i7 processor and a 1080 graphics card?
Hello, I’m planning a PC overhaul because I’m finding it difficult to enjoy my recently discovered games.
My current specifications are:
Intel Core i5-8400 @ 2.8GHz
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
8GB of RAM
1TB Hard Disk Drive
I intend to upgrade my graphics card and potentially my processor shortly thereafter. I’m also considering adding a solid-state drive and another 8GB RAM module.
My system currently utilizes an i5-8400 @ 2.8GHz, which I've configured using the BIOS to operate at a sustained 3.78 GHz (as indicated by Task Manager).
I own a GTX 1050 Ti, but it’s performing poorly… I particularly enjoy Apex Legends and am forced to utilize dynamic resolution – resulting in a noticeably degraded visual experience – as well as running at 1080p on my large 1440p monitor, which appears blurry. I employ minimum settings and a custom configuration file to further reduce these parameters. While functional, this is becoming increasingly frustrating.
What would be a suitable upgrade path for these components that would enable smooth 1440p gaming at 75 frames per second (on Medium/High settings)?
My preferred games include:
Apex Legends
PUBG
Project Cars 2
Skyrim*
XCOM 2*
The Elder Scrolls Online
Warframe
Borderlands 3 (I anticipate disappointment regarding graphics and frame rates)
*These titles are satisfactory to me.
I can comfortably run League of Legends, Skyrim, and XCOM; however, Apex Legends is my top choice, and I don’t want to continuously postpone playing it due to poor performance.
I believe an SSD and a new graphics card would be the optimal initial investments… but I'm uncertain about specific recommendations.
I’m not seeking a premium-priced card like the latest RTX models, perhaps something in the range of a GTX 1080.
My current video memory is limited to 4GB, and I believe an increase would be beneficial.
What are your suggestions?
It’s equally impossible to offer recommendations without an indication of financial constraints.
Consider exploring the options of the RTX 1070 or RTX 2060; these represent solid mid-range choices that shouldn’t significantly strain your finances. A colleague utilizes an Intel i5-6600k processor with a 1070 and achieves approximately 60-70 frames per second on demanding graphics in Borderlands 3. For improved Apex performance, a more economical choice would be the RTX 1060 with 6GB of memory. I own the 3GB model and was able to maintain high settings and consistently surpass 60 FPS. Please share your budget so we can determine the best path forward.
