They are quite compact. A Mini PC Stick with Windows 11 Pro, Compute Stick Intel Celeron J4125 processor, 8GB DDR4 memory, 128GB SSD, auto power on, and 4K HD/Gigabit Ethernet would be impressive. It would let you run AAA games smoothly. I suppose it's not realistic yet, as no one has achieved that before, though the Steam Deck is relatively small. Sony might consider a Pocket Station, MS XSteam Gamer Stick, or Nintendo’s Nano. The name for something like this isn’t clear, and they definitely wouldn’t be able to handle cartridges.
The Steam Deck's PCB is compact, while other models use larger boards for joysticks and similar components. You'd need to be inventive with cooling solutions to make it smaller. You can locate Steam Deck motherboards around $220. Otherwise, the board and substrate dimensions stop these bigger APUs from fitting in standard PCs. I wouldn't be surprised if the new HX 370 strix-point APUs are too large for typical 7" handhelds like the ROG Ally X and Steam Deck. Perhaps a 10" version would work, but not a 7". The main issue is that it's almost as big as the entire Steam Deck motherboard just for the substrate.
Those who consider this idea would do better to engage in conversation.
