Looking for guidance to boost a Memory OC Noob's performance on a 4x8GB Patriot 4400?
I've just moved to a 10700K on a Z490 Aorus Elite AC board. The 4400 modules fit with my setup and the two XMP profiles work, but only in a 2x8GB configuration. I'm experimenting with OC the powerful b-die sticks in a 4x8GB daisy chain board... what might happen? I followed the guide on GitHub, but ended up getting confused. Need some help navigating this. Yeah, I get the 2x8GB being most preferred. And given my board's daisy chain topology I should be going 2x16GB, but alas I have what I have and want to make the best of it. I've been able to get 4000 17-17-17-38 to boot but running OCCT I get like 20 errors within a few minutes. I started fooling around last and tried 3600, but couldn't boot at 16-16-16-38 or 17-17-17-38. The PC would attempt to boot and fail. I also tried 3800 17-17-17-38 with no luck. Also tried 3600 17-18-18-38, but no joy on booting. Again, though, I was able to boot at 4000 17-17-17-38 but would bsod while using prime95 and realbench. This was at 1.45v. EDIT: Running 4000 17-18-18-38 at 1.500v right now and testing it with Prime95 Blend to see what happens,
I understand the daisy chain idea, but clearly running four sticks causes major slowdowns. At 4000MHz it becomes unstable with 16-16-16-36 settings and 1.40-1.4250v. I wouldn’t go that route. What I mean is that overclocking should be limited to just two sticks for better results. That’s why Apex boards only have two slots. Even topology or daisy chained setups won’t match the raw bandwidth of a 2x8 at full speed, let alone account for latency. My rig uses an 8700K Maximus X Hero with 16GB, 2x8 at 4267MHz and runs at 1.40v with XMP. The four sticks really hurt performance. Unless you really need 32GB, consider removing two sticks to maintain speed. That’s my take. If memory is an issue, trim startup apps and disable unused services. Spending RAM talking to Cortana isn’t worth it.
I have this strong urge to fill all four slots—it’s ridiculous, but I can’t help it. I got these four sticks during Prime Day and snagged a great deal with a gift card. Maybe I should keep just two or go for a set that matches the board’s quality level, like 3600 16-16-16.
You might want a backup set if you damage any overclocking attempts. I keep it stable with two sticks. The CPU runs between 5.2 and 5.4ghz (varies by test), clock speed around 4000MHz, and the GPU is 14-14-14. I have screenshots available. Mostly for older cards and 3D tests. Some of my last models were GTX 480 580 with a 6950. I had some fun this year, but since you mostly watch the monitor, the obsession will fade. Just concentrate on the numbers and it should work.
Are you thinking stability depends only on increasing voltage? I'm currently at 1.500V for drama... I'd really like to lower the clock speed of these 4400s to around 4000 or 3600 with 14-14-14 or similar settings.
I was just providing samples for the 2x8 setup during benchmarking. (not a regular gamer) Your main goal is to keep lowering frequency until everything runs smoothly with all four sticks. Once stability comes, focus on Vccio and Vccsa voltages around 1.1 to 1.2v. Avoid exceeding 1.2v. Try to minimize cas latency if you can. 16/18 works fine at CL16 with 4x8. 3733mhz is acceptable at that setting.
