Hello, everyone. I’m hoping all is well. I have an 8700k rig and plan to pass it off to my younger sibling since he doesn’t have a PC. I’m thinking about upgrading and want to know what’s best—Intel or Ryzen options. I’ll be using multiple M.2 NVMe drives, a GPU, and a PCI-E capture card, so the connections will be heavy. I’m considering the AMD 3950X and also the upcoming 10700K. What do you think? Which direction should I choose?
If cost isn't a concern, I'd suggest the 3950x. A straightforward 3900x would work just as well and it would be a superior option compared to the 8700k.
A x570 board would be a solid choice, it's a more advanced model compared to the x470.
3900x works fine when you don't require all the cores packed into an AM4 chipset. Consider an Asus board with an X570 socket. They offer superior construction and higher-quality parts compared to others. The Strix X570-E is a solid choice when paired with a 3900x. Since your PCIe lanes will be in use, switching to AMD is the optimal path for Gen4 compatibility. Intel is still refining its strategy, so it's wise to hold off on anything impressive until the 11th generation. The 10th gen isn't worth the investment.
I concur that the 10th gen isn't worth it, better opt for AMD.
I truly hoped Intel would make a significant improvement with the 10th generation. It really hurt me. With such high temperatures, the power consumption will be substantial, and the TDP will add a lot of cost. The same old design remains, offering no new advantages, no assurance of compatibility, and Intel clearly isn’t looking to update things in 2020 or the next couple of years.
You own an x570 board, and I have a soft spot for the ASRock x570 Taichi.
