Looking for guidance on selecting the right RAM upgrade?
Hey, currently i'm running: Intel i7-6700 CPU ( DDR4-1866/2133MHz) asus H170 pro gaming motherboard ( DDR4 2400/2133 MHz) Kingston HyperX FURY Black DDR4, 2x8GB - 2666MHz RAM I would like to upgrade my RAM to 2x16G - which would allow for better future upgrades to 64G, my CPU and motherboard are staying for now, but i run into a problem here. I don't see the point in buying a ''slower'' RAM with 2400MHZ (which is the slowest i can find for 2x16G, and even then i can only find a handful of models available at such slow frequencies) , when for the same price i can get a ''newer'' model with 3200-3600Mhz at least. Would it even work if i bought a faster one and just plug it in, or is it a lucky gamble? I am from the EU so RAM is not cheap and i dont feel like buying one on a whim. Also if i understand this correctly, if i buy 2x16G 2400mhz ram, i will technically loose upgradability if later on i change my CPU for an intel i9-xxxx CPU which runs at 2666mhz ? Tnx in advance.
Are you looking for 32GB initially and then more? Your reasoning isn’t clear, but that’s up to you. I’d suggest a 2x8GB setup at 2666MHz instead. You probably won’t need 64GB unless you’re switching to DDR5 memory. A 4x8GB configuration works just as well for gaming as two 16GB units.
You can use any DDR4 kit with any current generation motherboard on the mainstream market. A 2400Mhz RAM package will always operate at its stock speed of 2133Mhz, regardless of the board you choose. You usually need to adjust settings in BIOS or overclock to achieve higher speeds. Buying components for a future platform isn't practical—we might have DDR5 then. Just purchase what you need now.
It's important to upgrade your motherboard to a 300 series chipset if you want to run an 8th or 9th generation CPU. Since only the 9th and 10th generations have core i9 options, you won't face compatibility issues unless you're replacing most of your PC components. You might need more than 64GB, but for now, applications like video editing and deep learning tools are the main concerns. Running multiple programs such as Discord, streaming, and Chrome simultaneously rarely uses up 32GB. Also, moving from 8GB to 16GB sticks is a significant increase—often more than double or even triple—making 8GB sticks the most cost-effective choice.
I really enjoy seeing the task manager reports with just one-digit percentages for RAM usage at all times. Everything makes sense now!
I never imagined I'd require more than 16G, but the updated Anno with chrome behind it is consuming it quickly. That's why I'm opting for the 32G. I'm sure I won't need the 64 combo; selling my old RAM or pairing it with a new setup is usually simpler if I upgrade now. Still, I think I'll have to compromise on the amount.
