Hello, I was thinking about purchasing a motherboard for my i7 7700K. I have a few Z270 options in mind and wanted to understand which one fits me best. Here’s a quick look at the models: ASUS PRIME Z270-P for $110, MSI Z270-A PRO for $115, and ASUS ROG MAXIMUS IX HERO for $190. My last board was an ASUS ROG STRIX Z270I, which had some problems, so I’m considering a replacement. Why is the ROG MAXIMUS IX HERO pricier compared to others? Is the extra $80 really necessary, or should I opt for the more affordable ones? Also, I want something with good audio quality. What factors make one motherboard stand out over another? Let me know which one you think would work best and why.
The Maximus IX Hero offers top-notch parts and excellent performance, no doubt. However, it might not be the most practical choice for an older system. Are you thinking about customizing your CPU as well? I remain neutral but likely would opt for the Asus Prime Z270-P.
It's unclear whether overclocking will improve performance in Maximus IX Hero compared to an ASUS PRIME. Both CPUs are likely similar in capability, so the difference may depend more on other factors like cooling and software optimization.
I would go with overclocking. It's tough to pinpoint the exact outcome, but the Maximus IX offers superior VRM cooling. The Prime can still work fine too. Much of this hinges on the CPU, and some overclocking efforts may not pay off. The main concern is wasting more resources on a system that's already nonfunctional. How long do you plan to run the CPU?
It might take about a year and a half. That means the Asus PRIME CPU could run hotter than the Maximus IX Hero. Should you invest more in a cooler like the NZXT Kraken X52 240mm, or save for something better?
Upgrading the CPU will increase its temperature regardless of the motherboard, since more voltage is used. Later, VRM temperatures may rise slightly more when upgrading on the Prime board compared to the Maximus. Upgrading the cooler can help lower CPU temps. Note that I initially considered the Prime Z270-A instead of the Z270-P. The Asus Z270-A performs much better, so I’d still save by choosing the MSI board, which is ideal for upgrades and cost-effective.
