Looking for guidance on selecting an old CPU?
In gaming, switching to a CPU wouldn’t boost performance; a Pascal GPU could actually provide the greatest improvement.
You'd likely need to replace the motherboard and possibly RAM, so the upgrade might not be worthwhile. An older AM4 chipset would offer more flexibility. A processor from at least the 8th or 9th generation Intel would suffice. If you prefer staying with your current setup, consider improving your graphics card instead of chasing higher speeds for your Sandy Bridge system—just keep in mind it won't support future upgrades.
A 3770K offers a slight performance increase in the 1155 system, which is still an improvement over the i5 2400. It provides better IMC when paired with sufficient RAM and compatible components. I fully support this idea. For a noticeable speed boost without a big investment, consider an AM4 setup using an R5 2600 processor and a more affordable board (e.g., MSI B450M-A PRO MAX II AM4 from Newegg). If you need extra features, you can still find good value by comparing options. The board I mentioned works well with my 2600, delivering solid results so far. 2600 models are often available cheaply on fleabay, which is where I purchased mine—it performed excellently. 8th or 9th generation Intel chips are also a solid choice, as discussed. Unless you already own such a configuration, I’d recommend sticking with it. The main limitation comes from newer CPUs like the R5 3600x; those require more advanced boards and careful selection to avoid issues.
