Looking for the best Wi-Fi setup for your gaming PC? USB or CPIE interface? It depends on your needs and budget. USB offers simplicity and lower cost, while CPIE provides better performance and range. The price varies widely because factors like speed, range, and features matter. For a budget-friendly pick around $20 AUD, consider a decent modem with dual-band support at 802.11n/ac for good balance.

It's not worth the trouble to fetch an Ethernet cable for me.

As @Enderman mentioned, try to use Ethernet whenever you can. If not, let me know your preferred speeds, the Wi-Fi access point you're using, and which standards it supports. Avoid USB; PCIe is a better option.

Aim for the quickest connection possible within your budget. The device running is a HUAWEI HG695, supporting dual-band 802.11n and 802.11ac at 2.5GHz and 5GHz.

Are you seeing any improvement with the current plan? Is there a chance to upgrade your speed? Could your ISP provide a faster connection? Running a new cable might help significantly.

It seems the connection is limited to around 20Mbps (not ideal).

You don't require anything extremely powerful to achieve that speed. I found something similar here: https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GC-WB867...0f67ac90cc
