Looking for guidance on selecting a new motherboard and CPU?
Hello! This seems to be a typical forum situation, but I’ve always appreciated it. Coming from Sweden, it’s often tough to locate reliable comparisons or reviews for products at similar prices, given the differences in pricing and stock availability. Right now, there’s a major AMD CPU promotion in Sweden (and possibly worldwide). I’m thinking about upgrading my old Ryzen 5 1600 to a motherboard with an AB350M-HD3-CF Gigabyte board. I use a 4K OLED TV, so the CPU limitation isn’t a big issue. There’s also an RTX 2070 in my setup.
CPUs matter more than just gaming performance, and some games I enjoy are more CPU-intensive than GPU-heavy ones. I’m planning to stick with the Ryzen 5 5600 this time, maybe upgrading to a 5800 if it makes sense long-term. Since I’ll likely keep this CPU for a long time, the GPU will probably be the main bottleneck for years to come.
The motherboard side is a bit confusing, especially when it comes to deals. I currently own the ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING (not the 2nd gen) for $112.65. It’s the most premium option, but I’m not sure if it’s significantly better than the Gigabyte B550M DS3H for $97.94. The latter has PCIe Gen 4, which might be worth it if I eventually upgrade to a RTX4000 series or similar. It also has F tier VRM, but that might not be crucial if I stick with a lower-tier processor.
The ASUS PRIME B450M-A II is priced at $83.24, which could be a good value if you’re looking to save a bit. I’m open to other suggestions that might be useful, even if they’re not widely available or priced high.
Last update: It supports CPUs from the 5000 series, which is great. https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-...upport-cpu
Thank you for any tips and advice on this.

I was completely surprised by this! I attempted to search for it but eventually gave up and thought it was outdated and too inexpensive xD. Do you have a reference for this? I’d appreciate reading it so I can keep the source handy. I’m not necessarily doubting your trust, but I want to understand it myself and have that information for later. Now I’m trying to learn how to update my BIOS... I’ve never done that before, and I agree I’d probably prefer the 5700X (325.40$) since it’s not discounted. The 5800X (322.56$) is actually cheaper, while the 5600 (184.22$) seems like the best option. The 5600G (161.67$) is marginally better but might be worth it with extra memory on the non-G version. The 5600X (225.40$) doesn’t seem worth it unless you plan to overclock the non-X model, which is possible. Even without that, it’s quite close. Thanks for the tips—it looks like a helpful site, though I don’t have a traditional budget. I’m just aiming for a good deal so I won’t need to upgrade later when offers drop. If it’s true, swapping CPUs without a new motherboard would be ideal. But for now, 3000kr seems like a reasonable target. You can say “Krone” or “Crown” if you prefer the Danish term.
Search online for your motherboard, visit the support site, look up CPU support, and find the relevant CPUs. Then update the BIOS. On certain boards, you can modify the BIOS through an Ethernet connection inside the BIOS, while others require using a USB stick. You can find guides on updating Gigabyte BIOS via USB stick by searching accordingly.
You can ask your question again. The comparison between 5600 and 5700X looks like it adds extra cores, but you're weighing the benefits against your long-term plans. Since you don’t plan to upgrade the CPU soon, it might be worth considering the performance gain for now.
