Hello everyone, I’m planning to try Linux and want to install it on a flash drive. I have a few questions. First, if I put it on my USB, should I disconnect the hard drives or not? Second, even though it wouldn’t be perfect, could I use the bootable drive for storage if I have a sufficiently large USB? I just need to download a few small files and don’t mind keeping it on my keychain.

You're not obligated, but if you're concerned about losing data, you can back it up. PopOS can be installed via USB, though I don't suggest it for permanent use. USB speeds are slower than SATA, which can reach up to 10Gbit if supported. SATA devices also use higher quality NAND flash compared to thumb drives. You'll likely see a significantly better MTBF with an SSD.

I understand satas might be the optimal choice, but having an OS on a keychain that also serves as a storage unit for tiny apps would be convenient. Nothing too wild—I can simply insert the drive into any computer and use it without any puns, haha. I might consider getting the Sabrent Rocket Nano drive.

As long as it functions in a replaceable way, like not being your main device for critical information, operations will gradually degrade and errors may occur. Using a USB bootable Linux distribution offers convenience and is common in enterprise settings. They configure it so that losing the flash drive doesn’t affect server data.
