had problems installing RAM on the first slot with my DRP3, but on another board it was the cooler’s heatpipe causing the issue, so little can be done. I had to trade my 2x4GB for 2x8GB (intended to get 4x4GB). It makes sense to use two sticks—expandability matters, gaming performance isn’t much affected by 3200MHz, and you can test the slots before buying more before expanding.

I’ve mostly settled on choosing two sticks, so my main worry is whether the cooler fan has space in slot 2 when it’s empty.

They'll sound quite similar. With only these two options, I'd choose the 2x16 kit since it allows for future upgrades.
