Looking for guidance on choosing RAM for your setup.
Hello, looking for some guidance. I've recently built a system for one of my kids. I'm trying to select the right ram with an upgrade path, so I don't have to sell old to buy new, but im having an issue understanding compatibility. My system specs are below PRIME X670E-PRO WIFI AMD Ryzen™ 7 7700X 8-Core, 16-Thread Unlocked I've checked the memory chart and when trying to max the sockets and speed, it seems im getting limited results. I've currently purchased CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) 6400MHz CL36 Intel XMP iCUE Compatible Computer Memory - White (CMH32GX5M2B6400C36W). This is 6400MHz ram, but without a DOCP profile enabled it detects at 4800Mhz. This works great 1,2 socket. But when I tried with an additional kit and use 4 socket of the same ram, DOCP doesn't work and system won't POST. Im not a ram enthusiast, and I don't really want to tinker. Just looking for an all around out of the box scenario with an upgrade path to max sockets and speeds. With that said, I think these are my questions: 1) Do I need to care about XMP, EXOP and DOCP. I don't really want to over clock, I just want to branded speeds. 2) and if I am suppose to care, what am I to look for? my board only has BIOS options for DOCP, but I can't find branded DOCP ram. I was with the impression that XMP is Intel and EXOP is AMD. and yet I have DOCP in the bios. Very confusing. 3) Is this infact the proper way the ram is suppose to work, and im just misunderstanding. Meaning, I'll only ever get the detected lower Mhz out of a 4 socket build? 4) Eventually I'll want to upgrade to the max supported speed of 8000Mhz, but if I do that with a 4 socket build, will I still run into the same lower speeds without a ram profile selected? Ive done all the googles and reviewed the motherboard memory compatibility charts, but I was also given the impression that those charts are usually out of date. Eager to learn where I'm going wrong and suggestions on what to buy or try. thanks in advance, BB
To achieve a decent pace around 6000 CL30, you need overclocking solutions like XMP, EXPO or DOCP. These options are essentially one-click upgrades, but maintaining steady speeds at lower rates requires minimal effort. XMP is a trademark, so AMD often labels it as DOCP to avoid licensing fees; some manufacturers include it in the BIOS while others charge a royalty. 4 DIMMs can work unpredictably, so if you prefer not to tweak manually, consider swapping in 2x32GB modules. DDR5 8000 is unlikely to fit reliably on a 4 DIMM setup, especially under XMP conditions. The chip selection is limited, and stable performance demands careful handling. In short, speeds between 6200–7600 are generally slower than DDR5 6000 CL30/32 because they operate in a less efficient mode. Lowering your memory can actually boost performance, even though it seems counterintuitive.
Thanks, @RONOTHAN## Your explanation helped a lot. Should I consider other brands? A trial purchase seems fine. Amazon offers a solid return policy. Is this the device you're recommending? CORSAIR Vengeance RGB DDR5 RAM 64GB (2x32GB) 6000MHz CL30 AMD Expo iCUE Compatible Computer Memory - Gray (CMH64GX5M2B6000Z30) https://www.amazon.ca/CORSAIR-Vengeance-...59a9930752
I compare different memory options. Corsair is reliable, but alternatives like G.Skill, TeamGroup, Silicon Power, Adata, Lexar, Klevv are also solid. If you can cut costs without sacrificing performance, a cheaper 32GB non-RGB kit might be better. This works if you really need 64GB. I’d likely pick one of the cheaper 32GB non-RGB models listed above.
