I’m evaluating a move from 1080p to 1440p on my current rig (RX5700XT, R5 3600XT, 16GB RAM, 3200MHz). I’m hoping for a smoother gaming experience, especially aiming for 60fps at high/ultra settings. Have others with similar configurations shared their thoughts? Would my setup be able to maintain performance without major drops? Any tips or experiences would be valuable. Thanks!

Depends heavily on the game titles for maximum performance. LoL's ultra will run much better than AAA games like Cyberpunk or Forza.

Varies with the game's age; in newer, more demanding titles you may need to lower settings at the top or use FSR to fill the gap. Try AMD VSR yourself to see if you can achieve close to 1440p on a 1080p screen. It should provide a useful reference.

How's your current performance? It's not the optimal setup for 1440p, but calling it the worst isn't true. The High/Ultra options might not look realistic in the game, really. You need to grasp that 1440p has almost double the pixels compared to a 1080p display, so the hardware will face between 120% to 180% of its workload—this varies based on the game and your settings.

It should work fine after all! Keep in mind that Ultra often impacts performance more than it improves quality compared to normal settings. Nearly every game is tuned for high settings, so Ultra just adds another level for powerful machines. Check out the video—everything ran smoothly at 1440p Ultra with identical hardware as yours.

I share the thoughts of @Hinjima and others about your PC's capabilities. Based on what I understand about the 5700 XT, you'd likely achieve steady 60+ frames per second in casual games, and possibly even 90fps in competitive titles if you adjust settings. You might need to lower certain options if you're aiming for higher performance. It's worth testing it out—your monitor can handle 1440p, but the game will render everything at that resolution.

Your current frame rate at 1080p is solid. Expect a drop when scaling to 1440p, but recent AAA titles might still run reasonably well. However, you likely won't get great performance with graphics-heavy games like Cyberpunk, LoRA, or AW2—BG3 could be acceptable at best.

I find this chart helpful for understanding relative GPU performance. It’s not a perfect benchmark, but it offers a reasonable overview. Scroll down to the first chart (1080p Ultra) and click the arrows to the 3rd image for 1440 Ultra. During their gaming tests with an i9-13900K, your GPU achieved between 50-60 fps. The titles tested included: Borderlands 3 (DX12), Far Cry 6 (DX12), Flight Simulator (DX12), Forza Horizon 5 (DX12), Horizon Zero Dawn (DX12), Red Dead Redemption 2 (Vulkan), Total War: Warhammer 3 (DX11), Watch Dogs Legion (DX12). There are some tough games here, especially at "Ultra," and you can likely improve with a "High" setting. Many titles are much less demanding than Flight Simulator.
