Looking for engaging titles in RPG and JRPG genres?
Hey there! I'm looking for some titles in those game types you mentioned—RPG, JRPG, MMORPG, Strategy, and MOBA. I'm open to free options too, though it helps if they're available on Steam. It should run smoothly on any of my computers. Thanks for the suggestion, Vitalius!
JRPG meets Monster Hunter, RPG vibes with Dark Souls, MMORPG elements, strategy depth in RuneScape, MOBA action from StarCraft 2, and competitive games like League of Legends or SMITE.
Crytek produces a solid first-person shooter, though I don't remember its exact title. I'll make sure to refresh this information later.
This clarifies some points from the link about Dota and Moba differences.
Get the PCSX2 setup, then grab the Star Ocean ISO until the end of time. This emulator is considered one of the top JRPGs ever made, and despite being old, the gameplay feels fresh and the visuals remain impressive. The storyline is especially engaging for tech enthusiasts like yourself.
Divinity: Original Sin is well-received, freshly launched, and currently getting plenty of positive feedback.
MOBA refers to Massive Online Battle Arena, encompassing games like League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, Smite, Dota 2, and similar titles. For JRPGs, purchasing a PS3 or any Sony system lets you enjoy Shin Megami Tensei. When it comes to MOBAs, Dota 2 demands more learning curve, relies on counterplay, and features slower controls, though its characters are engaging. It requires greater expertise at advanced levels compared to LoL, and even more so when starting out. League of Legends offers smoother controls and a more user-friendly interface, but suffers from dull characters and recent issues with new champions, item balance, and character updates—after two years of play I stopped due to boredom and frustration. The community is often toxic, competitive, and prone to harsh criticism. Smite stands out as my preferred MOBA for its action-oriented gameplay and more intense matches. Fewer toxic players are present there, and the absence of cross-team chat helps reduce negativity. It still has room for improvement, but I believe it will become better. You can obtain a beta key from Humble Bundle for a limited time if you wish.
These were the main consoles for JRPGs, though. For PC, RPGs usually involve systems that let you customize your character’s role as the game unfolds. This can include choices about weapons, leveling up, and skill development—factors that shape your character type. You get the point. Bastion is a solid indie title, but I think you’ve already seen it. I attempted E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy, but I couldn’t access it. Maybe it’s just my personal preference, but I didn’t enjoy it. It feels similar to Fallout, yet it’s quite different (a strange way to put it, I know). I’d strongly suggest the Darksiders series. They’re impressive, much like God of War and Legend of Zelda combined. Then there are the classics: Skyrim, Two Worlds II, Risen, Witcher 2, Mass Effect, Deus Ex, Dead Island, BioShock, etc. JRPG Grotesque Tactics offers similar mechanics and a satirical twist on typical RPG conventions. One Way Heroics is another title you might find a free RPG version for, though I didn’t play it. It feels old-school. Long Live the Queen is more of a dating sim, but I really like it—its presentation can be intense. It’s not for everyone, though. Watching YouTube clips could help you decide. Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale was entertaining, but it leans more toward strategy games depending on your path. The Last Remnant is a solid choice; I played it long ago and bought it, but didn’t finish it then. I was preoccupied at the time. YMMV To the Moon has a compelling JRPG narrative and is excellent. It runs 4–5 hours and I’d recommend it to anyone who loves storytelling. Chantelise is a straightforward JRPG; I played it briefly, but didn’t dive deep. Ys & II are still unknown to me, though I think they look promising for PC. MMORPGs aren’t my game, but I do play one ARPG—Path of Exile. It’s similar to Diablo 2 but much more polished and expansive. I really like it, though you’ll face frequent losses. It’s technically an MMO with over 70,000 players? Not quite in the traditional sense. Strategy RPG? Are you asking about Strategy RPG specifically? I don’t play MOBA games for the same reasons I avoid Counter-Strike.
