Hi, I just acquired an old Compaq and set up DOS 5. The system is working, but it doesn’t have built-in programs, so I’m looking for help with finding DOS versions of the apps I use: Tiny CAD, GIMP, VLC media player, and Microsoft Photos. I’d also appreciate it if those DOS tools could be open source. Thanks for your assistance!

Would you prefer Linux for your specs?

They’d need to handle setting up the graphics settings manually. Most current programs don’t do that. Plus, DOS had strict memory limits—like 640KB—which makes it tough for modern applications. Stick with Linux if you want compatibility.

Windows seems unlikely, but a style like tinycore could be an option

Uncertain about the exact meaning of "old Compaq," but I’d pick a Linux distribution. All the programs or alternatives mentioned are supported on Linux.

Pentium III with 128MB RAM, it won't serve as my primary system, I just needed to try running DOS. Yes, I understand I could use a virtual machine for that, but it wouldn't be the same.

Modern tasks aren't delivering the classic DOS feel you expect. Even a Pentium III struggles with HD video decoding.

I remember the days of DOS like it was yesterday. That kind of setup wasn’t something I’d choose again. A custom autoexec.bat for specific games helped squeeze more performance from the limited 640K RAM, but I wouldn’t do that myself. Windows 3.1 had its charm, though. If you’re interested in retro gaming, you might enjoy it—but if you prefer streaming or browsing, a Linux distribution with a lightweight desktop would be a better fit.

I should have mentioned that the program I used is for audio playback, my mistake.

Similar to your first PC, I had RAM installed. For DOS, it's best to use a VM, and the only programs the machine can run are Windows XP or TinyCore.
